Mafia I: Breaking it in Gently

Post by Ghosty on Thu Jul 06, 2017 5:53 pm

Nestled inside a valley full of lush greenery and a flowing stream, the peaceful and quiet village of Abbervale seems as old as the landscape it sits in. Abbervale has always been more than a tad bit isolated from the outside world, but that has suited its residents just fine. Life there was simple, from generation to generation, uncorrupted by the sin and debauchery that saturate the more modern cities. God and the noose have been the only things Abbervale ever needed to keep its citizens in line, and the latter hadn't seen use in decades- still, it dangled out there on the old oak tree at the middle of town.

But it seems that the noose will soon be taking its next victim onward to judgement. A murder most foul has occurred; Ol' Roberto was found dead this chilly August morning, his glassy-eyed corpse laying in the pen with the goats. The implement of the crime, a knife from the looks of it, was nowhere to be seen. Only nine citizens of the Abbervale could have committed this heinous crime- and so, as is tradition in this humble mountain village, it shall be those nine suspects who determine which among them has blood on their hands.
--------------------------------------------
This game is using an open setup. The following is a list of all the roles in the game:

5 Vanilla Townies
1 Cop
1 Doctor

1 Mafia Goon
1 Mafia Roleblocker

The game begins during the day phase, which will last no more than one week of meatspace time. Currently, five votes are required to successfully achieve a lynch. If enough votes to lynch have not been cast before one week of meatspace time passes, whichever player has the most votes on them at the time will be lynched. In the case of a tie, the player among tied players who first reached the tying number of votes will be lynched. However, this mandatory lynch rule will only be active for the first two day phases of the game. From day three onward,  lynching will NOT be mandatory, and if a week of meatspace time passes before a majority has been reached, no lynch will occur. Remember: your vote DOES NOT COUNT unless it is phrased as "Vote to lynch: [Name]".

Quoting, taking screenshots, or otherwise presenting proof of what your role PM says is punishable by death. Likewise, editing your posts may prove to be a surprisingly lethal hobby. Remember those "Not even once" anti-drug commercials? Yeah, it's like that.

Role PMs are being sent out shortly. Please wait warmly while we prepare.

CURRENT VOTE COUNT (4 VOTES TO LYNCH):
Like9Orphans: 1 vote (PurpleRam)

CURRENT DAY PHASE DEADLINE:
Tuesday (July 18th), 11:00 PM CST

Player Status:
Arc - Dead, killed Night 1 - Town Doctor
Hans Gruber - Alive
MeanGreenMachine - Alive
PurpleRam - Alive
Like9Orphans - Alive
Nihil - Alive
Lordredpanda - Dead, lynched Day 1 - Mafia Roleblocker
Raptor-Senpai - Alive
Lord Crump - Alive

Please verify in-thread that you have received and understand your role PM. Remember, any flavor in your role PM is just that- flavor. It's just to add a little fun, but you aren't role playing your character. From here on out, it's nothing but cold, hard logic.

Actually, as a new player I have a couple of questions to ask in order to make sure I'm understanding things correctly. First, are you allowed to change your vote if a majority has not yet been reached, or is your vote locked in when you cast it? Second, is it correct that the instant a majority is reached the day is over, and nothing posted in the "twilight" between that and the thread being locked for night phase counts (including vote changes, if those are normally allowed)?

You can change your vote as often as you like, and even retract your vote without replacing it. You have the right understanding of things for your second question, however- as soon as a majority vote has been reached, it's too late for anybody to pull their vote back even if I'm not around to lock the thread at the time.

This is relevant, because an endgame scum tactic called "quickhammering" wouldn't work if people could retract their votes after a majority is reached but before the moderator can officially announce the lynching. Quickhammering refers to a situation where some or all of the Mafioso quickly and collectively move their votes onto one person who didn't quite have a majority of the votes in order to get them lynched. In doing so, the Mafia can ensure the person will be lynched because a proper quickhammer gives no time for anybody else to pull their votes back, though the Mafioso pretty much revealed their identities by doing so (which is why it's a endgame tactic).

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Post by Hans Gruber on Sat Jul 08, 2017 1:19 am

The worst part of a Mafia game is the very first stage of the game. Commonly called the Random Voting Stage, or RVS for short, this phase is where everyone babbles nonsense at each other until either somebody does something scummy, or somebody attempts some nonsensical gambit or another, such as claiming to be scum. Now, ladies and gentlemen, if I may have your attention, I will now be performing a nonsensical gambit. Prepare to be amazed as I, using nothing but the wording of the role confirmation post, pinpoint exactly who composes the scum team.
(As an aside, I will be color coding usernames, in order to make this brick of garbage easier to read. I generally like to color people's names on a blue to red gradient, in order to show if I think they are town or scum. But I'm not doing that here. These first colors are purely for aesthetics.)
Arc: The message feels tense. Under pressure, perhaps? It strikes me as vaguely scummy, but I think there are better targets on the table here.
Hans Gruber: Blatantly the scummiest message here. It's a good thing I know I'm town.
MeanGreenMachine: The second scummiest message here, for the same reason as mine.
Purple Ram Reads like a townie determined to uncover the truth. Pulling the wool over our eyes? Who knows? Probably not though. I think this is the towniest response.
Nihil: Very terse and efficient. Not much to glean here. Leaning town, probably.
Lordredpanda: The shortest confirmation message. Not much to say here, either.
Raptor-Senpai: Another very brief message. My hedge pick for scum, in the highly improbable event I'm wrong about one of the other two.
Lord Crump: Very indecisive. Indicative of a guilty conscience, methinks.
Like9Orphans: The meatiest post, with the most to look at. Much of it is nonsense, rather like this post. And the focal point of the profile picture makes me think a 10th orphan was cropped out of it, which is very suspicious behavior. On the other hand, scum tend to say no more than they absolutely have to. Therefore, such a wordy opening post makes me fairly certain we're dealing with town here.

There you have it, folks. My picks are Lord Crump and MeanGreenMachine. Since I can only vote for one, I:

I don't know much about this game. It definitely seems like the first day is nothing but guessing, at first blindly and then perhaps possibly more educated as people make posts. It seems like you definitely want people to think that you're a vanilla townie though. Claiming to be mafia should definitely get you lynched, unless there is a jester or something like that possibly in the game, but here we know there isn't. Claiming a power town role will probably get you killed during the night by the mafia, and there is no useful info such a person could have gleaned yet anyway. So allow me to assure you all that I am definitely a vanilla townie. Just like the rest of you will say, except half of you are liars.

I'm mildly distressed to have received the first lynch vote. I'm not sure how I feel about putting out a vote with so little info, though I have to say that it does seem like a town-ish thing to do, intuitively. The scum seem likely to wait until the town turn on each other and then jump on one of the wagons. I don't think OMGUSing Hans will accomplish anything here (look at all this terminology I learned from the wiki!), but I'm not going to pretend that I understand anything about the psychology of role confirmation posts. I'll just wait for some more people to chime in.

Why did I use definitely four times in that first paragraph? I am ashamed of my English skills right now. Editing posts seems like a beach of protocol though. I'll just chalk it up to the stress of receiving a lynch vote on post number-goddamn-one.

I would like Ghosty to weigh in on post editing. Legal ot naw? It has been prohibited in every forum I've ever seen, but I saw nothing in the rules banning it here. So what say you?

Ah yes, post editing is something that had slipped my mind, but is definitely not allowed. Do not edit posts, unless you're me. I can edit posts, and as you all are about to see or have possibly already noticed, I am about to enact a great change to the OP.

Hans Gruber, you were quick to weigh in on others. How about you? You seem awfully eager to kill someone. I guess you have an itch and the only way to scratch it is to see someone stretching out a rope. I don't like such scum in my quiet city. Vote to lynch: Hans Gruber.

So far the only person not to immediately vote to lynch Hans is the person Hans voted to lynch on the first post. Interesting. We in the town desperately need information, so I'm more likely to vote for someone who refuses to meaningfully participate in discussion. And there are still four people who haven't said anything more than answering role call. Heh heh, role call, get it? I like that pun. Anyway, get in here lurkers!

Hm...

Vote to Lynch: Nobody

Red, How is Hans' message harsh? He picked some scum with what little knowledge we have, and knowing that someone has to make the first move. while I think he looks scummy for other reasons, I don't find that harsh, and your appeal to emotion makes you feel a bit scummy in my book.

No U!

Post by Hans Gruber on Sun Jul 09, 2017 1:46 pm

Four replies. I had hoped to wait for everyone to weigh in before jumping ship, but that's probably not necessary. Someone 8 the b8.
MeanGreenMachine- Some of these votes are more truthful than others.
PurpleRam- I assure you, my hands are quite clean. I just washed them, after all. I have no intention of locking horns with you, so to speak, because I am now as certain you are town as I can be, considering this is day 1 and basically no posts have been made.
Arc- You're just mad because I tried to skip RVS. And my color choices were perfectly fine.
LordRedPanda- Now that's what I call scumposting! Let's sum it up. You smelled blood in the water, so you hopped on an established bandwagon while echoing the sentiments of a previous poster, all while trying to play it cool. I would say my gambit has paid off.
